Interoperability has always been one of the Cosmos Hub’s core value propositions. The vision laid out in the original whitepaper was clear: a future where independent blockchains seamlessly connect, sharing liquidity, users, and services without reliance on centralized intermediaries. While IBC made that vision possible within Cosmos, the reality is that cross-chain connectivity remains fragmented across ecosystems.
With IBC v2 and Eureka, the Cosmos Hub is setting out to change that. These developments are an attempt to redefine Cosmos’ role in a post-interop world by expanding its reach beyond the Cosmos SDK-based chains and into Ethereum, Solana, and other major blockchain networks.
For the first time, Cosmos will have a bridge protocol that is simple enough to be adopted by networks outside of its own ecosystem—one that lowers integration barriers while still retaining the security and decentralization that IBC has always prioritized. And at the center of it all, the Cosmos Hub aims to establish itself as the main routing layer, a role that could reshape its position in the broader crypto landscape.
Why IBC Expansion Matters Now
Interoperability has come a long way, but in practice, the experience is still fragmented.
Liquidity is split between multiple bridge providers, making cross-chain transactions inefficient.
Users constantly ask how to bridge assets, highlighting the poor UX of most current solutions.
Developers struggle to build multi-chain applications that work across ecosystems without heavy infrastructure burdens.
The Cosmos Hub was early in recognizing these problems, but the technical complexity of IBC limited its expansion beyond the Cosmos SDK ecosystem. This meant that while IBC became the most secure interoperability protocol, it failed to reach the largest liquidity pools on Ethereum and other major chains.
IBC v2 - A Simpler and More Scalable Interoperability Layer
IBC v2 fixes this by introducing a streamlined design that makes it much easier for non-Cosmos chains to adopt. v2 is a significant refinement of the original IBC protocol. While the first version enabled secure, trust-minimized communication between Cosmos SDK-based chains, its complexity made it challenging to integrate with non-Cosmos networks like Ethereum and Solana.
IBC v2 addresses this by introducing a lighter, more flexible protocol that reduces integration overhead. By simplifying how networks interact, it expands IBC beyond Cosmos, bringing high-volume ecosystems into the interchain economy.
IBC Eureka
And on top of that, IBC Eureka introduces a service layer on top of IBC v2 that helps coordinate connections between chains, handling routing, gas abstraction, and other features that simplify the experience for both users and developers.
This shift is critical because it could make Cosmos the default routing layer for interchain activity, bringing new utility to ATOM and reinforcing the Hub’s role in crypto.
What IBC Eureka Actually Does
At its core, IBC Eureka is about simplifying and scaling IBC for mainstream adoption.
One-click asset routing to any chain, reducing friction for users.
Dramatically cheaper bridging, with Ethereum transactions costing up to 6x less than existing bridges (~$2).
Native IBC security, with trust-minimized connections to Ethereum, Solana, and beyond.
Fast finality, with sub-30 second transactions on Ethereum and near-instant settlement for Cosmos-based chains.
Zero integration overhead for chains already using IBC—networks that connect to Eureka benefit instantly.
The idea is that instead of expecting every chain to manage their own complex bridging infrastructure, the Hub can handle the coordination and route transactions efficiently, the same way internet service providers route data across the web.
For developers, this means they no longer need to build and maintain custom bridges. For users, this means the bridging experience finally becomes seamless.
What This Means for the Cosmos Hub
For years, the Cosmos Hub has debated its role in the interchain economy. Is it just another chain among many? Or does it have a unique function that makes it irreplaceable?
With IBC Eureka, the Hub is making its case as the network that connects everything.
Instead of just being an economic zone for ATOM, it becomes a core infrastructure layer for interoperability.
Instead of relying on independent bridging solutions, chains can leverage the Hub for secure, low-cost routing.
Instead of Cosmos being confined to its own ecosystem, IBC v2 allows it to reach the highest liquidity chains.
This shift aligns with Cosmos’ long-term vision, but it also puts the Hub and ATOM in a more competitive position as the blockchain space moves toward a multi-chain, multi-rollup future.
In a world where hundreds of new chains launch each year, having a reliable interoperability hub becomes more valuable than ever. And if the Cosmos Hub can successfully position itself as the most efficient and secure routing layer, it will create lasting demand for ATOM and the services it provides.
Looking Ahead
IBC v2 and Eureka mark a critical turning point for the Cosmos Hub. If successful, they could solidify the Hub's role as the key infrastructure layer for cross-chain interoperability, bringing new value to ATOM and the broader ecosystem.
The next steps will involve community discussions on how best to align the Hub’s economic model with this new function and what governance structures need to be in place to support this expanded role.
For now, the direction is clear: Cosmos is making its play to become the backbone of the interchain future. The success of IBC Eureka could determine whether that vision becomes reality and if it does, this will be YUUUGE!
