Penumbra has integrated with Stride to introduce private liquid staking, marking a significant shift in how staking and privacy coexist in decentralized finance (DeFi). Traditionally, liquid staking has been confined to public blockchains, where all transactions, balances, and transfers are visible to anyone. This integration allows users to shield and trade liquid staked assets without revealing their financial activity.
How It Works - Shielding and Trading Staked Assets
With this new integration, users can stake assets like stATOM, stTIA, and STRD while maintaining complete transactional privacy. Unlike conventional staking models, which require users to lock assets on public ledgers, Penumbra’s approach keeps staking and liquidity fully shielded. This means users can participate in staking without exposing their holdings or transactions on-chain.
This model also enables private trading of staked assets within Penumbra’s end-to-end encrypted decentralized exchange (DEX). Traders can execute swaps without revealing order flow, effectively eliminating the risks of MEV attacks and front-running, common issues in public blockchain environments.
Cross-Chain Privacy and Ephemeral Bridging
A standout feature of this integration is the ability to move staked assets across different blockchains without exposing transaction details. Using ephemeral addresses, users can bridge into Penumbra, execute transactions privately, and bridge out to another chain without leaving a traceable footprint. This allows for seamless cross-chain movement while maintaining complete financial privacy.
This is particularly relevant for the Cosmos ecosystem, where users frequently move assets across various chains. By preserving anonymity during cross-chain transfers, Penumbra addresses a significant pain point in today’s DeFi space.
Adoption and Growing Shielded Liquidity
Since the integration went live, the ecosystem has seen growing adoption. Currently, more than 1.2 BTC, 300K USDC, and other assets are shielded on Penumbra’s network. This suggests an increasing demand for privacy-first financial tools in DeFi.
The growing popularity of shielded liquidity pools is not just about privacy but also about enhancing security. By keeping transaction details private, Penumbra minimizes exposure to malicious actors who exploit on-chain data for MEV extraction or front-running.
