Namada has entered the third phase of its mainnet launch, bringing IBC asset transfers and shielding functionality online. This update allows users to move supported assets into Namada and shield them within the network’s Multi-Asset Shielded Pool (MASP).
With these new features enabled, users can begin experimenting with private transactions while preparing for the next phase of the rollout.
IBC Transfers and Supported Assets
The latest update enables Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) transfers, allowing users to send assets from external Cosmos-based chains into Namada. Initially, the following assets are supported:
ATOM/stATOM
OSMO/stOSMO
TIA/stTIA
INJ
Additional assets may be introduced through governance over time.
Shielding in the MASP
Once assets are transferred into Namada, users have the option to shield them using Namada’s privacy framework. Shielding removes transparent transaction history, allowing users to interact with their assets without exposing identifiable transaction details.
By transferring assets to a shielded address, users gain access to Namada’s data protection guarantees. These shielded transactions will become increasingly relevant as more applications and integrations are built around the network.
Gas Fees and Payment Options
A key feature of this update is the ability to pay gas fees in any governance-enabled asset. This means users do not need a separate NAM balance to cover transaction costs, making it easier to interact with the network.
Keychain and Ledger Support
To shield assets, users must connect to the Namada Keychain extension, which supports both transparent and shielded addresses. However, full Ledger support has not yet been rolled out.
Shielded addresses are currently only available via the Namada Keychain extension.
Ledger Nano S does not support shielded addresses.
Support for Ledger Nano S+ and Ledger Nano X is expected in a future update.
Users looking to interact with the shielding feature should ensure they have the latest version of the Namada Keychain installed and re-import their accounts if necessary.
Preparing for Phase 4: Shielding Rewards
Shielding rewards are set to be introduced in the next phase of Namada’s launch. Users who shield assets now in Phase 3 may become eligible for rewards in Phase 4.
Since the network is still in its early stages, those participating in shielding should proceed with caution, testing with small amounts and staying informed about updates from the Namada community.
Conclusion
With Phase 3 live, Namada takes another step toward its full mainnet functionality. Users can now transfer and shield IBC assets, but certain features—like Ledger support and full ecosystem integration—are still in development.
