In a long-anticipated milestone for interoperability, the Cosmos Hub has successfully executed its first IBC (Inter-Blockchain Communication) transaction to Ethereum—on testnet. This marks the beginning of a new phase for Cosmos, as its interchain communication protocol begins extending beyond Cosmos-native chains.
What Happened
The transaction was submitted from the Cosmos Hub to Ethereum using the new IBC-EVM light client architecture known as "Eureka," developed by Interchain Labs. This marks the first time that Cosmos has established a native communication channel with Ethereum, without relying on third-party bridges or wrapped tokens. For developers and users, this opens up new possibilities for secure, low-trust cross-chain activity.
Is This A Big Deal?
Heck yes! IBC was originally designed to connect sovereign chains within the Cosmos ecosystem. With the introduction of Eureka, that functionality is expanding across ecosystems. Ethereum, one of the most established and capitalized networks, is now within Cosmos’ reach. The testnet transaction shows that the Cosmos Hub is capable of acting as an interchain coordinator beyond its native environment.
The benefits are significant: better security, fewer intermediaries, and enhanced composability for applications that span multiple chains. Developers could soon move assets, data, and logic between Cosmos and Ethereum in a native, trust-minimized way.
What's Next
Although the transaction was executed on testnet, the Cosmos Hub is preparing for mainnet in April. This comes after the Gaia v23 upgrade, which includes IBC v2 and other required components for Eureka to go live. Once live, IBC Eureka will connect the Hub to not only Ethereum, but also eventually to Solana, Bitcoin layers, and Ethereum L2s like Arbitrum and Base.
The Hub is finally beginning to live up to its full potential as a foundational infrastructure for the Internet of Blockchains and we at Stakecito are so here for it!
